Let’s start off with the facts…

from World Vision’s very website:

Q: Do you send volunteers overseas?
A: We currently do not send volunteers from the U.S. to international locations.

Q: Do you send interns to your international projects?
A: No, we do not have international intern opportunities at this time.

And yet, I am going to South Africa as a World Vision intern.  This opportunity is absolutely a “but for the grace of God” experience, one of many these days.

What will I be doing?  Dear Dawn, you asked and others contemplated asking it.  So here goes (from my Terms of Reference) I will be:

1) doing detailed literature searches in peer reviewed journals and subsequent cataloguing of applicable articles to ensure that Global Health and also HIV and AIDS Hope Initiative strategies are fully supported by current, peer reviewed health and social science research,

2) Assist in design of web-based tools, within the framework of World Vision’s KM technology strategy, to better engage the Global Health community of practice.

3) Execute other duties as assigned outside of these terms within reasonable boundaries of my internship.  These may include, but are not limited to: -Knowledge management update support for the Health and Hope Initiatives, per the information management strategy. -Assistance with presentation preparation for World Vision’s participation in global conferences. -Assist with internal literature review for the Global Health and Hope Initiative engagement with the Food Crisis Program Group on HIV and health related Food Crisis Interventions (summarize key learnings on each document in a grid matrix). -Attend some of the Hope and Health trainings in Africa. -Coordinate with team to develop a first list of standards for national office HIV and Health/Nutrition accreditation.  -Assist research and writing of HIV prevention paper.

By the way, I leave in less than 24 hours from now.  I’ve barely started packing but that is what today is for, right?

Stay tuned tomorrow and the next few days for drama from the trip and arrival.  I’m sure pictures will be coming!

Get it? Got it? Good.
