What the World Needs Now…

is prayer, prayer, prayer.  I am redirecting from HIV & AIDS and Islam to something more pressing on my heart.  I will get back to the conference later, trust me.  This post may not be suitable for children but I think people like Joanne and Tootsie can handle it, if they’re reading.

I am linking to some news articles.  One is about a tragic incident just 15-20 minutes away from where I am…

Here’s another awful story from London…

And another from Tennessee…

I attended my first small group here last night and one member commented that parents think they are sending their kids safely to school (or hypothetically to the market or to a rugby game or where ever).  But just ask the kids who attend public schools or private or walk down the street.  It is not safe.  Even if it’s not on the tip of your brain that students are bringing swords or guns or more commonly knives to school, school is not safe.

Physically, spiritually, and especially emotionally kids are brutal.  They beat one another down with bullying, teasing, etc.  I know–I’ve done it and I’ve received it.  Most make it through decently, even though I think a lot of counseling and therapy show problems leading to these periods of time years later.

On top of that, some homes are not safe for kids.  Their parents may be abusing them in one way or another.  And most of us can agree that the streets are not guaranteed to be safe.

And as we have recognized time and again when kids are given no power over their lives (be it at home or school or where ever) they search for it elsewhere.  Quite a number of them turn to the occult in hopes of gaining power through dark dark music or Ouiji boards or maybe even Satanism.  Not only can they commune with god or the idea of it, but in some religions or practices they can become a god of sorts.

And this mix of being beaten down and wounded mixed with anger and resentment and maybe even the occult has led to violent attack after violent attack and countless other attempts.

I’m not saying we should live in fear and never let our children out the front door for “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23: 4

But there is only so much we can do for the children in our lives or ourselves — most of which are attempts to stay out of the valley of the shadow of death in the first place.  Life is short and precious and sometimes no matter what you do you find yourself in that valley.  So  to protect ourselves we wear a seatbelt, stay out of dark corners or alleyways, love our neighbor as ourselves.  But this only goes so far.  Reaches so wide and then stops short.  There is only so much we can do as humans.

We must pray to cover the rest.

Here is my prayer for today:

         Lorica of Saint Patrick

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

I arise today
Through the strength of Christ’s birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In the prayers of patriarchs,
In preachings of the apostles,
In faiths of confessors,
In innocence of virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me;
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me,
God’s shield to protect me,
God’s hosts to save me
From snares of the devil,
From temptations of vices,
From every one who desires me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a mulitude.

I summon today all these powers between me and evil,
Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom,
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of women and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man’s body and soul.
Christ shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that reward may come to me in abundance.

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through a confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation

St. Patrick (ca. 377)

  2. I love that prayer. I’ve seen it before, but it is still fresh. You could meditate a long time on that prayer. It seems to pull from every page and principle of the Bible, lifting up the reader to God.

I agree 100% that we need prayer, prayer, prayer, Jennifer. Oh, it is so important.

For many years I have read or seen news reports of – well it mostly the children that catch my heart – people that are caught and convicted of one thing or another. I have asked God: “Where was the church when this person was young? Was there no van ministry? Did this person have no Christian neighbors, friends, family members, or co-wokers? Did no one see, pay attention, or care about this child? And what are we to do now, God? What am I to do? Who helps this child now that this has happened and they are in jail? What will happen to them? What can I do?”

    Pray, pray, pray.
